Maria Myllys

Hey! I’m Maria, a third-year bachelor’s student. I’m organized, a confident Excel user, and an approachable person, which is why I’m applying for the position of Treasurer on the board of Prosessiteekkarit ry for 2027. Although I’ve gained quite a lot of experience at Aalto and in student life during these past three years, I still want to challenge myself and experience a completely new side of it. I’m interested in joining the board because I want to give back to the student community that means so much to me, while also learning something new myself. I love Otaniemi and teekkariculture, and it would be great to have the opportunity to contribute to and develop it as part of the board.

I believe I would be a good fit for the role because I’m organized, responsible, and good at managing my time (Google Calendar is probably my most-used app…). As Treasurer, I would make sure that all my responsibilities are taken care of properly and that the finance committee I’m responsible for runs smoothly, both in terms of communication and practical matters. I learn quickly, so I’m confident that the transition to a new Treasurer would go smoothly. In addition, I have completed a minor in business studies, and this spring I will be taking a course on financial management and reporting in companies. So, alongside my enthusiasm, I also have practical knowledge of finance.

I’m a collaborative person and enjoy getting to know new people. I’m easy to communicate and work with, and I enjoy planning and coordinating things together. I’m not afraid to take responsibility or take initiative. I’m ready to prioritize my board responsibilities and genuinely dedicate time to them. As a board member, I promise to take good care of my own responsibilities, but I’m also not afraid to step up and help with all kinds of tasks. I’m always happy to take on new experiences with a positive attitude.

The work of a treasurer is important, but sometimes very independent. How would you ensure that all the tasks (e.g. financial statement, paying bills) will be done in time?

Working independently suits me very well, as I am highly self-motivated and able to get things done efficiently on my own. To make sure that the bookkeeping is completed, payments are made, and invoices are taken care of, I make sure to schedule specific times for each task in my calendar and keep track of all deadlines. In addition to my calendar, I also set reminders for deadlines and other important matters in the Reminders app on my phone. I find that these methods make it easy to stay on schedule and ensure that everything gets done properly and on time.

At the beginning of the year, separate budgets are created for the various committees of the Guild of Process Engineering. How would you ensure that committees follow the budget?
Staying within budget requires good communication and co-operation between me and the different committees. In my opinion, the key is to agree clearly together on all expenses and to encourage everyone to openly discuss and resolve any issues that may arise.
