Julia Karhumäki

Hello you – yes, you right there!

I’m Julia, a third-year bachelors student studying chemistry and materials science, and I am applying to be one of PT’s hosts next year! I am not a stranger to the Smökki kitchen, gaining experience since my fuksi year as a hostess helper and CanCan responsible, and most recently by leading my own committee as this year’s Lämmönsiirtäjä!

The event committee is even closer to my heart after all of this, which is why I am applying to be next year’s IE. Expanding our range of events and making the IE-led official roles more easily accessible to all is what draws me into this role, alongside doing my part as a member of the inter-guild committee. I hope to create events that attract both older and younger guild members, while keeping our traditions alive. The most important part of the job for me is that every guild member feels welcome just as they are, no questions asked. I hope to drive this forward by making our events feel easily approachable and hopefully creating a tight-knit committee of officials.

I feel that my experience leading LSTMKXIV, with sometimes unstable budgets and various other obstacles, gives me concrete experience in reaching the goals set at the start of the year especially considering the 15th anniversary of our guild. I am not afraid of long days and hard tasks, which I hope shines out in my partnership with my fellow IE. With me, you gain a warm, can-do minded and communicational partner for the next year <3

In general, how do you see the event selection of our guild? What kind of events would you like to organize?

I am content with the types of events that we currently organise and find the amount of them to be reasonable, where each one of them stirs enough excitement while not being overpowered with selection. Personally, I am interested in organizing themed events, especially in collaboration with other guilds but also in the possibilities of chiller events, for example in collaboration with the head of internal and external affairs.

How would you take international students into account at events?

At a lot of PT events, the inclusion of content in English has commonly been, possibly accidentally, seen as an additional afterthought. I’d love to be a part of changing our events by making them more inclusive. Things I think could be focused on are finding a Song Master with an interest in upping the English or multi-lingual catalogue and lowering the stakes of joining to IE helpers, making the role feel more accessible to all. I’d also enjoy working alongside PT’s own IntCo, by organizing collaborational events, as this might help bridge the gap in between Finnish and international students.

Being IE is teamwork. What kind of partner would you like for yourself and what kind of partner would you be? How would you maintain a good atmosphere and working habits with your partner?

I find myself to be quite reflectional person, that enjoys a good plan. Alongside that I am creative and pretty good at expressing myself. In a good partner I respect the ability to communicate cleanly, as without this baseline no pairwork is possible. A certain level of realism and the skill to jump in to any situation are also positive traits in my opinion. As the IE also handle financial matters together, I would appreciate a partner that also has a good eye with that kind of stuff, so that the work wouldn’t fall on me alone. No good dynamic works without clear communication, that I hope to uphold throughout the year. the stakes to send a message or give feedback to each other should be extremely low, as the job is built on trust. To keep spirits high I’d like to organize chill refreshers just for the two Ies – a simple hang out maybe, for example – while also ensuring an even split in the workload, accounting fr tougher times in the others life.

IE helpers are IE’s most important help in organising events. What kind of IE helper team would you like to form and how would you ensure that they form a close-knit team?

The amount of IE helpers has been a topic of debate for a few years. I would personally keep it relatively similar to other years while focusing on variance. I’d love to see some familiar faces from years before, as with a good balance of old and new the skills can be passed down, while creating a new generation of officials. As for forming a tight-knit team, I find it important to keep my own hotlines open to make it easy to come forward with any kind of problems at a low stake. To ensure that everybody at least gets along, I would prefer to change up the shift patterns so that the same three people are not always working at the same time. I’d also enjoy organizing multiple different kinds of refreshers throughout the year, if the budget so allows. An interesting option would also be to link up with another guild to have a refresher together, since a playful competition is a great way to bring a team closer together.
