Juho Turtiainen
Hello!
My name is Juho Turtiainen, and I am a second-year chemical engineering student, and I am majoring in chemical engineering and processes. During the past year I have spent my time in four different roles as an official and as an ISO, which has motivated me to apply for the position of Head of Study Affairs for the board of 2026.
It’s important to include students in decision making. The Head of Study Affairs has the opportunity to influence important decisions regarding education and day-to-day student life, improving the quality of life of every student. I want to work on bringing the students and the university closer together through active feedback gathering. I am eager to work as a representative on various committees, promoting the students’ interests. I look forward to hearing your ideas on how to improve our studies.
I have also had the opportunity to be a part of the abi-marketing this past year, which is also an important part of the duties of the Head of Study Affairs. In my opinion the marketing campaign was very successful, and I want to ensure that the quality of the marketing remains high. It’s important that motivated students are able to find the School of Chemical Engineering.
I would consider the phrase “cool, calm and collected”, often used by a certain head of state, to be an accurate description of myself. Job experience has taught me responsibility, teamwork skills and interpersonal communication. I believe that my motivated and determined attitude would be an asset to the entire guild and the board as the Head of Study Affairs.

- What substantive or structural issues would you like to influence in our studies? What do you think are the best ways to influence?
First, I believe that I shouldn’t pursue things solely based on my own views and beliefs, but most importantly I want to gather feedback from students on what changes they want to see, because I believe that will benefit students the most. Through active feedback gathering I will have the most up-to-date information on the issues the students face.
I believe that cooperation with companies should be increased in our studies in order to better prepare students for professional life. Solving cases given by companies will be a valuable opportunity to apply their studies in a business context and get acquainted with different companies. Students also get to see what kind of problems companies face and what skills are required in professional life.
I believe that long-lasting changes are best made by working as a student representative and influencing decision making on the various committees. When quick changes are needed, I believe that the best approach is to contact the staff directly. For example, by reaching out to the person responsible for the course.
- How would you improve the communication between the university and the students?
I believe that there is still room for improvement in the activity of giving course feedback. The threshold for providing feedback is quite high, which is unfortunate because giving feedback is one of the most important ways to improve the quality of our studies. Course feedback is too easily forgotten at the moment, and I believe that refining the implementation would increase the activity. As previously mentioned, I also intend to collect feedback directly from students. I aim to motivate students to give feedback by organizing a lottery for the participants.
Active communication is also very important as it helps students stay up to date on matters related to their studies and important related events. Also, the role of academic advisors can be further emphasized to ensure that students receive comprehensive support and guidance in their studies.
- How would you develop association’s study-related events?
I want to organize other easily accessible events similar to the traditional Professors’ and lecturers’ coffee where students can freely discuss with the staff. I would also try to include the staff in the other already existing free time events.
Other types of events I would like to organize would be workshops where students can work together on their assignments and hang out. I would also like to collaborate with companies to organize events where students get to solve cases as groups, which would support learning and help prepare students for professional life.
