Valtteri Hamari
Hello dear guild members, I’m Valtteri, a third-year prosessiteekkari and I am applying to be the guild’s Fuksi Captain for 2026!!
Some of you might know me as the guild’s current hostess or from other smaller roles I’ve accumulated over the past two years. However, many don’t know that last year I was already torn between applying for Fuksi Captain and IE. Although various circumstances led me to the hostess role, my passion and interest in the Fuksi Captain position have only grown this past year, as I’ve been able to observe the duties more closely from both the administrative and operational sides.
As a captain, I would be above all a conscientious and easily approachable first contact for new students into university and student life. In my opinion, the best part of the fuksi year was the feeling of belonging to a community, and I would like to help this by creating a safe and welcoming atmosphere right from the orientation week.
In the board, I would like to maintain a relaxed, encouraging, and constructive atmosphere, as well as cooperation between committees. Collaboration, both with my pair and other board members is vital and is also seen by other guild members as a positive activity they want to be a part of.
If you have any questions about my application, I will gladly answer them here or on TG @Valtterieh (feel free to come chat about the application or anything else as well :D)
1. If you were Fuksi Captain, what would be your goal for the next 1.5 years?
My goal for the first half of the year would definitely be to develop an effective dynamic with my co-captain and to thoroughly learn the tasks, practices, and development areas from my predecessors. This would serve as a strong foundation for the following year, making it easy to build our own vision upon it.
During my year as captain, my goal would be to maintain the high standard of fuksi tutoring with minor adjustments, and to be an inspiring, reliable, and approachable person the fuksis can rely on. I believe a good fuksi year and an encouraging team spirit are fundamentally created by the fuksis themselves. Therefore, I would aim to increase interaction between different fuksi groups while also leaving them enough space for self-expression.
As fuksi captain, my primary development goal would be to more closely integrate Chemical Engineering fuksis into events and the student culture. While I think this has improved significantly in recent years, there is still work to be done.
2. Students who do not feel that they belong to a community or have friendships with their fellow students at the beginning of their studies often lag behind in their studies. How do you manage to integrate all fuksis into a community or help them to find their own group of friends?
The foundation for forming groups should be laid right from the orientation week through various events, association activities, and the fuksi groups and ISOs. Groups could also be combined and mixed occasionally to increase the likelihood of finding like-minded people. This would be further supported by a broad offering of fuksi events in both Finnish and English, including low-threshold, alcohol-free casual hangouts alongside academic and traditional events.
To help students find their groups, it would be important to actively promote various hobby associations to the fuksis even after the Ota- and Stadi-orientations as interest in these activities might only spark much later than the first month. Actively presenting the guild’s official roles would also be crucial, as working together in these often forms surprisingly close-knit groups.
3. PT has over 200 fuksis starting each year. What challenges and opportunities do you see this bringing to PT’s fuksi education?
In my opinion, the large number of fuksis is above all a richness. It makes it much easier to find new friends both during and after the fuksi year, and it enables a very diverse field of fuksi events, as every event will appeal to at least some fuksis.
I see the only downside to the large intake as the difficulty in forming community spirit, which requires much more work from PT’s fuksi education compared to smaller guilds. Because of this, I think it would be important to maintain the guild’s open and welcoming atmosphere right from the start in pHuone, in fuksi group meetings, and on excursions. It would also be absolutely essential for the fuksi education team to maintain good hype and buzz throughout the year around the unique opportunities and competitions available to the fuksis.
4. How would you promote equality between Finnish- and English-speaking bachelor fuksis?
I would promote equality by making fuksi events either bilingual or entirely in English whenever possible. I am perfectly comfortable hosting events in English, and bilingualism wouldn’t require a huge amount of extra work. I would also gladly receive development ideas and perspectives from both current and former EtCo representatives and ChemEng ISOs.
Outside of fuksi events, one area for development I see is the songleading at sitsis which has been discussed somewhat over the past year. I would consider it important, especially for the year’s more formal sitsit, to have the songleading done in both English and Finnish. This would significantly promote equality and make the events more attractive to English-speaking fuksis as well.
5. Being Fuksi Captain is teamwork. What kind of partner would you like for yourself and what kind of partner would you be? How would you maintain a good atmosphere and working habits with your partner?
In my opinion, the most important things in partner work are openness, a good atmosphere, and supporting each other even in difficult situations. With these things in mind, I would hope for a partner whose work I can trust for the entire 1.5 years, and who would be willing to implement more creative ideas at times. As a partner, I would be above all laid-back, motivated, and ready for action, someone who is easy to work with.
I would maintain a good atmosphere and working habits by looking after both my own and my partner’s well-being and by also trying to relax occasionally, for example, with the committee and my partner. If needed, I would be ready to take on more of our shared responsibilities if my partner felt their own well-being was faltering.
