Latest news from the student union office
For now, AYY doesn’t recommend organizing any private events that involve close contacts. Neither does AYY organize any public events itself. During spring 2021 AYY will not hold any larger public events and strives to organize remote events and small group events according to possibilities imposed by the current situation. For example the AYY annual ball that was to be held on 15th of May will be moved to the end of the year. All rentable AYY spaces are closed until 4th of April and the matter will be handled again on week 13 the latest, according to updates to the capital region corona restrictions. The service office remains temporarily closed and is only open on moving days to those moving. It is however possible to receive service office services via phone and email.
There have been personnel changes at the office. Johanna Mikkonen, who has previously been an English translator, has been chosen to be a project worker in the renewal of association categorization. Eetu Manninen, completing civil service, has started as IT support person and graphic designer Iina Sillfors has left AYY. Karmen Hellenum has started as Sillfors’ replacement.
AYY has publicly commented on student wellbeing and Finnish government action regarding handling of corona. You can find the blog post by board member Tiina Pajukari here. In addition the Ministry of Education and Culture has granted the student union extra aid. A review of uses is under way, and the membership has also been consulted.
During the start of the year there have been nine new association applications to operate within AYY. The application period for operations grants is open until the end of June. RemoteWappu 2021 planning is underway and new teekkari caps have been ordered from Wahlman.
Negotiations on door opening services with Securitas have progressed well, and an inexpensive agreement has been reached and will be communicated to tenants soon.
Preliminary debates
A preliminary debate on changes to the AYY rules was done at the meeting. The discussion and comments will be used to prepare final drafts for the next representative council meetings. The proposals include changes to election eligibility, representative council meetings, remote meetings, membership fees, the museum, and the position of trust of representative council members. CHEM repco group also had its own comments on the changes, mostly regarding the proposed change to temporarily suspend representative council members from meetings for poor or damaging behaviour.
Other things
The National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) send their greetings to the repco meeting. The SYL representative was Konstantin Kouzmitchev, our student union’s contact person, who told us about news regarding the corona situation and the SYL centennial. In addition the meeting included a financial review of association activities from last year and latest developments of the student center project.

The Bioproduct Chemistry group is led by Prof. Monika Österberg. The group works on the development of renewable, high added-value materials based on lignocellulosics. Our research is especially focused on understanding interfacial properties using atomic force microscopy (AFM, imaging and force measurements), quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D), and surface plasmon resonance (SPR), among other techniques. So if you are interested in joining our team, we encourage you to apply.

16. Kesäkuntoon 2020
Are you feeling stressed? Thinking that meditation would improve your focus and wellbeing? But you’re just not motivated to start? Well in the Kesäkuntoon 2021 event you will be rewarded for meditation! Nothing complicated, just take 10 minutes to yourself a few days a week and you will reel in points for your group. It’s a Win-win scenario!
Last year for Kesäkuntoon 2020 we managed to arrange a bunch of sports try-outs to help everyone try new things. This time, that might be harder. We’ll see what we can do, but we encourage everyone to explore activities safely, keeping corona-related restrictions in mind! Some suggestions are: jumping rope, weighted hula hooping, HIIT videos on youtube, jogging, dancing or interval training!
If you haven’t already, this is a good time to join the official telegram group https://t.me/joinchat/aZwQhDqSIskxMGY8, and go to the @kesakuntoon_bot to set up your team! And we do suggest making a team of 3-4 people. You can do things together and share things with each other. Points can only be added every Sunday, so having a team to help remind yourselves is a great idea! And the bot will not give any reminders about meditation. If you’re struggling to find a group, feel free to message one of us!
