Otso Helenius

Greetings to the esteemed former of the board and all the honorable Process Engineering students!

I’m Otso Helenius, a second-year student, and my academic path has led me into the world of bio–something-or-other (biobimboilu, as we like to call it). I’m applying for the position of spokesperson in our honorable guild.

I want to join as spokesperson to help keep our guild’s communication fresh, approachable, and engaging – even for those who aren’t immediately drawn to the more traditional teekkari culture. I’d bring my own flavor and a playful sparkle to our social media and communication, while of course making sure everything gets done properly and on time.

Even though I don’t have prior experience as a guild official, I want to show that anyone with the right attitude and willingness to contribute can get involved in the guild’s activities. I actually see it as an advantage that I haven’t been deeply involved before – I can bring in fresh ideas and perspectives of my own.

As a member of the board, I’d like to promote a relaxed, open, and inclusive atmosphere. I don’t want the guild’s activities to feel like a closed teekkari insiders’ club, but something everyone can easily join and be part of.

Finally, I promise to be a spokesperson who gladly listens to others’ ideas and feedback – whether it’s a new social media campaign or just a better meme. After all, the best vibes come from doing things together.

1.     What makes successful and effective communication possible? How can urgent information be brought to the attention of the entire association as quickly as possible?

Successful communication is concise, clear, and attention-grabbing. It’s important that the message doesn’t contain too much information so that the key points don’t get lost. Everything should be presented clearly so that everyone can understand the content. Although clarity is the most important aspect, announcements are more memorable if they include something original and humorous. Telegram and PT’s information channel are the fastest ways to deliver urgent messages.

2.     Do you find something to develop regarding PT’s weekly newsletters?   If yes: what? If no: why not?

Weekly updates could be made more concise, containing only the most essential information of the week. Miniwiikkis has been a good example of this. The weekly update could be published on PT’s website, and only the most important and recent points could be highlighted in the version sent by email. The weekly update could also be made more interesting if it were occasionally presented in a different format, for example as a short video. This would help attract more attention.

3.     How important do you see the use of social media as part of the association’s information and visibility? Should the use of some platform be increased or decreased?

Social media posts can convey information in a much more colorful and engaging way than announcements or written summaries. The followers of PT’s social media accounts are mostly people who already belong to the Prosessiteekkarit, so these channels can be used to promote events and other activities within the guild. Of course, some followers are outsiders, so social media can also be used to create a positive and fun image of the organization for everyone. In my opinion, Instagram would be the best platform to focus on, as it is widely used.

4.     Information committee has a wide range of officials and there can be found several different units. How would you ensure the share of information and the division of work in your committee? Is there any specific sector of the Information committee that you would like to develop?

I would divide responsibilities among the heads of different units, provide them with the necessary information, and make sure they pass it on to their respective teams. I would also request occasional progress reports to ensure that communication is flowing effectively. In the worst-case scenario, if someone failed to fulfill their responsibilities, I would step in and handle the tasks myself.
