Helmi Artama

Hello! My name is Helmi and I’m applying to be the next year’s host/hostess. I am a second-year prosessiteekkari and my major is chemical and process engineering.

I came to Aalto without knowing anyone but from the beginning Prosessiteekkarit and student life have drawn me in. Prosessiteekkarit and events have offered me a lot and that’s why I would like to give something back to the guild. During the past year I have been a host/hostess helper and it has been rewarding and fun but also eye-opening. Especially sitsis require a lot of work that I didn’t realise as a fuksi.

I am a really outgoing person and I believe that as a host/hostess I would be able to use my own creativity. However, the best thing about this position in my opinion is that it is shared with someone because I perceive myself as a team player. I have done a lot of voluntary work from a young age. For example, I have been involved in church activities in various roles for several years. I have gained the ability to throw myself into new situations, developed my group management skills and learned how to work with different kinds of people.

For me, it would be important and meaningful to get the chance to organize sitsis and other fun events where people can relax, forget about schoolwork for a while, and enjoy good company. The friendships I have created through student events and as an official have been one of the best parts of my studies, which is why I would love to give those same opportunities for both current and future prosessiteekkarit.

I’ll be happy to answer questions here or in Telegram @helmiar

See you!

1. In general, how do you see the event selection of our association? What kind of events would you like to organize?

In my opinion, the guild is currently organizing a suitable number of events. Especially the sitsis are varied and often held together with other guilds or student associations, and I’ve found them enjoyable and well-functioning both as a participant and as a host/hostess helper. As an IE, I would like to focus on strengthening collaboration with other CHEM guilds. We already have some great events, but I see no reason why there couldn’t be more of them and in a more diverse form, such as smaller-scale sitsis or sauna evenings.

I would like to organize events where everyone feels welcome, regardless of their academic age or level of activity in the guild. As the amount of financial aid for students decreases this year, money might also become a barrier for some people to participate. Therefore, I’m open to discussions and eager to find out what kinds of events the members would like to participate in the future.

2. How would you take international students into account at events?

I must admit that, as a Finnish-speaking student, I’m not as familiar with the events organized for international students. In the board, I would like to work together with the International Master’s Captain to find ways to encourage international students to participate more actively in both events and the guild’s activities.

For example, I think Prosessiteekkarit and ChemEng could organize sitsis together in English, which might lower the threshold to participation. Above all, it’s important to listen to international students to understand what kinds of events they would like to have and then figure out how we could respond to those wishes. They are just as much a part of the guild as anyone else, so we should definitely put time into encouraging their participation in events.

3. Being IE is teamwork. What kind of partner would you like for yourself and what kind of partner would you be? How would you maintain a good atmosphere and working habits with your partner?

In shared positions, the most important thing is open and honest communication. I would hope for a partner who knows how to set their own boundaries and is motivated for the role. I, in turn, would be an understanding and encouraging partner, even in challenging situations. My strengths are reliability and a positive approach to work. I promise that my smile won’t fade even when cleaning toilets or floor drains. I’m organized and can be trusted to carry out what I’ve promised with care and responsibility.

I consider myself an open person and someone who is able to talk about my feelings. I would like to be a shoulder to lean on for my partner in difficult moments and vice versa. A good partnership dynamic is built on trust and open communication.

4. Helpers of IE are IE’s most important help in organising events. What kind of helper team would you like to form and how would you ensure that they form a close-knit team?

In my opinion, the size of the host/hostess helper team in 2025 has been appropriate. There has been enough work for everyone, but no one has needed to feel guilty if they couldn’t help out at a particular event. I wouldn’t want to significantly reduce the size of the group, as the workload might then become unevenly distributed among the host/hostess helpers. Usually, more first-year students are chosen as host/hostess helpers, and I would like to continue this tradition next year as well. Being a host/hostess helper as a fuksi is an effortless way to get involved in volunteer work, which can later spark interest in taking on bigger responsibilities.

To support team bonding, I would organize several fun events, for example a relaxed board game evening or climbing at an adventure park. Team spirit could also be strengthened by varying the work shifts so that everyone gets a chance to work together with different people.

Moikka Helmi! Hienoa, että olet hakemassa tähän mahtavaan ja antoisaan virkaan. Tässä muutama kysymys:

    1. Miten motivoit apu-IE:n siivoamaan smökin vessat viideltä aamuyöllä, kun vessat ovat päässeet varsin kamalaan kuntoon?
    2. Joskus asiat eivät mene kuten suunnittelit. Olet unohtanut tehdä gluteenittoman pääruoan, apu-IE on jakanut ainoan vegaaniruoan väärälle henkilölle, tiskikone hajoaa, jälkiruoka kärähti uunissa ja smökin pääsulake on palanut. Miten toimit ja missä järjestyksessä?
    3. Mikä on lempioluesi?

Tässä muuta this or that kysymys. Valitse mieluisempi ilman perusteluja.

    Keittiö vai sali?
    Kahvi vai tee?
    Sauna-iltama vai smökkibileet?
    Kasvisruoka vai liharuoka?
    Nachopelti vai pyttipannu?
    Kokous vai workshop?
    Kertikset vai kilisevät?
    Kova vai pehmeä?
    Pasta vai peruna?
    Kossu vai jallu?
    Jatkot vai sillis?
    Ruoka vai juoma?
    Wappusitsit vai Kaveri- ja perhesitsit?
