8.      Greetings from CHEM repco group

Representative council meeting 3/2021 of Aalto University Student Union (AYY) was held on Wednesday 21st of April again remotely via Zoom. There were 43 members of repco present and the main topics of the meeting were deciding on the student centre project as well as approving the financial statement for 2020 and granting freedom from liability to the AYY 2020 board. You can watch the meeting recording from Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZZuKWCz3tg and the meeting documents are available in AYY Inside: https://inside.ayy.fi/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=72908807

The next repco meeting is organised on 27th of May at 17.15, with topics including the decision on changes to student union rules and various rules of procedure. The links to meeting livestreams can always be found from the AYY website ayy.fi/live!

If you happen to have questions regarding representative council meetings or the work of the CHEM repco group in general, you can always send a message to the group chair Jani Anttila (@jampade) or vice chair Airi Antikainen (@airikatriina)!

Best regards,
CHEM representative group

Latest news from the student union office

At the start of the meeting board member Vehkomäki presented the latest news from the student union office. The board and office have held their holidays during the spring to prepare for workload in April. A new civil service worker will start at the office in June, with tasks including for example the upcoming elections to repco in the fall. The office is also recruiting a summer worker in service advising (open until 25.4.). The board decided in its meeting 14/2021 to accept four new associations to the first list of AYY associations and granted them the AYY start fund. AYY ja OUBS as well as Jäynä and Äpy will organise a Wappu studio in Dipoli (22.4.-31.4.), consisting of various streamed events. Tutor trainings have been held for over 1000 new tutors. Yet upcoming are additional Zoom sessions over summer, with topics including equality, remote grouping and intercultural communication. The community structure project is also progressing, and the project now has its own project worker.

The songbook report ordered by AYY has sparked some debate. The background of the report was discussed in the office news. Last year the technology students’ songbook was withdrawn due to racist content. A report regarding such aspects of the content was requested from Nyyti ry and SOCO ry, and was finally received at such short notice from Anna Lemström. The report addresses the problematic themes of the book, with the main emphasis on the content as a whole. Based on the report, development points have been discussed with Lutku and the Songbook Committee. A new agreement has been reached with Securitas, and starting from 6.4. door opening service will cost 30 euros to AYY tenants at all times. The general service door codes have also now been withdrawn, due to disturbances and burglary cases. As for real estate projects, an investigation is underway whether the student union can proceed with its part of the Miestentie II project before other partners. The new Otakaari housing projects are in the preliminary contract negotiation phase. In education policy the main emphasis has been in influencing Aalto strategy and its intermediate goals.

Management Report and Financial Statement

AYY financial director Monika Kivimäki presented the financial statements of 2020 and other associated documents. Repco approved the financial statements and annual management report. The 2020 surplus was left in the surplus and deficit account. Freedom of liability was granted to the 2020 board in the next meeting point.

Student Center

The largest share of meeting time was allocated to going through the student center project materials, presented by board member Otto Usvajärvi. A representative of ACRE was also present at the meeting to answer questions from repco. You can find the materials from AYY Inside if you want to have a detailed look: https://inside.ayy.fi/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=72908807

The representative council approved the student center project agreement without a separate vote, as no alternative proposals were presented as opposed to the board motion. In its decision, the repco authorizes the AYY board to negotiate in the project according to AYY interests and sign a project agreement for the student center. Conditions were set for the decision, such as the sale of the current central office to ACRE, reaching an agreement on spaces to be rented to ACRE, commitment to a total cost ceiling of 8 million euro and in general the absence of changes unfavorable to AYY in the project agreement.

11.   Summer housing has started

Are you or your friend looking for a home for the summer? In the summer, AYY’s apartments can be rented with fixed-term contracts for the period 1 Apr–31 Aug. If there are not enough applicants among AYY members, housing can be offered to anyone, for example to your friend who comes to work in the metropolitan area for the summer. Only shared apartments, two-room and three-room apartments are available for the summer. There are no studios available, but it is possible to live alone in two-room or three-room apartments. All apartments are unfurnished.

13.   Questionnaire about reference management tools

A questionnaire is now open on a topic that touches all students (and staff!) in some ways, to provide views on reference management tools. (What are reference management tools? Typically one encounters them when writing a thesis, a scientific article, a project application… and uses them to create the list of references cited, see e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reference_management_software.)

A student hinted that it could be good to ask guilds to share information about the questionnaire, and hinted me of the list: https://www.ayy.fi/en/list-of-associations/special-status-associations. After a moment of thinking, I decided to spread the message and email the organizational addresses on the list.

Here are links to the survey, published in into and aalto.fi. Feel free to share with your student members, if you like (or not to share – it that case, sorry for bothering).

DL for answering is 14.5. The survey is anonymous and takes a few min to answer. In my view, the more answers we get, the better. (By the way: I am a mere side person in this story/survey. I am just in general interested and in favor of asking the students, and also author of a new Scientific Article Exercise (SAE) at Aalto CHEM that touches on the topic—more info of the SAE for the interested here.)

15.   Looking for summer worker to work on sulfied Mo-based catalysts

Dear Aalto CHEM students,

The Catalysis group led by Prof. Puurunen (http://aalto.fi/cmet/catalysis) is looking for a *summer worker* to work on sulfided Mo-based catalysts for hydrodenitrogenation. The work will be done in the HDN catalysis (HDN Cat) project funded by Neste in the period May-August 2021.

To get an overall idea of the project and of the research being made, you can have a look at an earlier job description: https://blogs.aalto.fi/catprofopen/2019/08/19/we-are-hiring-looking-for-two-doctoral-candidates-on-the-area-of-catalyst-development-and-testing/. Skills mentioned in the earlier job description are taken as an advantage, but what we value the most is curiosity and willingness to learn. The job involves operating a laboratory scale batch reactor, performing associated analytics, preparation of new catalysts – and more. Our staff will make sure you are properly trained to do the required tasks. The chosen person will receive valuable experience in experimental research and working in a joint project with a large Finnish company.

This position is now open to Aalto students (MSc level and BSc level are both possible). To apply, please use the following link https://rekry.saima.fi/aaltohome/application_edit_welcome.html?job_id=3289&jc=6&lang=en&did=5900 and provide us your motivation letter, CV and transcript of records. You can also provide names and contact information of reference persons, and optionally other documents. Please provide the files as pdf and name them as: HDNcat2021_FamilynamesGivennames_<description-of-the-file>.pdf (example: HDNcat2021_PuurunenRiikka_MotivationLetter.pdf).

This Aalto-internal call will be open until May 12, after which we start reviewing the applications. Our wish is that the applicant could start working during May 2021, but early June is also possible. The specific starting date will be agreed on with the applicant.
