Emilia Porttinen
I am Emilia, a third-year bachelor’s student majoring in Bioproducts, and I am applying for the position of Spokesperson for the Board of 2026.
For the year of 2025, I have been working as a part of AYY’s Museum Committee, as a halloped in the School of Chemical Engineering’s EDI-group and as a Hot Tub Master. While these roles have been rewarding, I have found myself missing the Prosessiteekkari-community. The desire to return to my roots and contribute in a concrete way sparked my interest in this board position.
In my previous volunteer experience, I have gained experience on managing larger projects. Also, my courage to trying new challenges without hesitation has grown.
In the Spokesperson role, I’m especially excited about the opportunity to apply and further develop my passion for visual design. I’m particularly interested in handling daily communications with guild members, through the weekly newsletter and Telegram. Effective communication ensures that everyone can participate and no opportunities pass anyone by!
I am open and calm by nature, and I enjoy meeting new people. My composure helps me keep things organized even during busy times. On the other hand, I’m also a master of goofing around, no situation feels so bad once you’ve had a good laugh about it.
I’m happy to answer any questions or comments either here or on Telegram @emiliaporttinen!
1. What makes successful and effective communication possible? How can urgent information be brought to the attention of the entire association as quickly as possible?
Effective communication, in my opinion, is based on the timely use of Telegram and weekly newsletters. For example, promoting major events or informing members about various changes related to the association’s activities can conveniently reach members through Telegram’s information channels. The newsletter, in my view, is suitable for a wider range of topics in addition to events and changes; it could also include job postings or advertisements for events organised by other parties in the community.
Urgent information reaches all members most effectively through Telegram, either via the general group or the information channels. Using Telegram also makes it easier to respond to any additional questions that may arise, as the contact details of the responsible person are really easily accessible with just a few clicks.
2. Do you find something to develop regarding PT’s weekly newsletters? If yes: what? If no: why not?
I think the association’s weekly newsletters are really good in terms of content. Increasing their length would also increase the time required to read them, which could easily reduce their reach. However, as a person with dyslexia, font choices have a great impact on how easy the text is to read for me, and if possible, I would change the font from Times New Roman to something a bit simpler. This would make the newsletter slightly more accessible for everyone.
3. How important do you see the use of social media as part of the association’s information and visibility? Should the use of some platform be increased or decreased?
Social media, especially through TikTok and Instagram, is in my opinion an important part of PT’s promotion to applicants during the joint application period, as well as at other times. The role of social media in conveying atmosphere and overall vibe is significant, and I believe it influences applicants’ decision-making. PT’s visibility on TikTok has grown tremendously over the past few years, and I would definitely continue in the same direction!
4. Information committee has a wide range of officials and there can be found several different units. How would you ensure the share of information and the division of work in your committee? Is there any specific sector of the Information committee that you would like to develop?
Managing a diverse committee is a challenge I would approach primarily through openness. For example, I would hold meetings with the different units of the committee, where upcoming projects could be developed together. This would easily engage all members and help build a sense of team spirit. In planning the content and timing of these meetings, I would strongly consider the input of the committee and always start meetings with a quick check-in round to gauge everyone’s mood. I would also support the units in establishing a clear and balanced division of work so that everyone has the opportunity to try new things and the workload does not end up falling on just a few people.
