I’m Sanem, a second-year student in ChemEng. I am applying for the 2027 board as IE because I want to organise welcoming events where people can take their minds off of the stress of university, and give PT a very memorable 15th year.

I was an activity coordinator for PT’s International Committee this past year, and also did volunteer work both within and outside of Otaniemi. These experiences made me realise how much I enjoy organising events, and I really want to take this a step further by becoming IE.

I’m someone who finds a way to have fun in everything, even the most dreadful tasks. But this doesn’t mean that I won’t take my responsibilities seriously! The key is to have fun while still being professional and responsible. If I have to clean up vomit from the floor at a party at 4 AM, I’ll do it without a doubt and then laugh about it for 15 minutes straight the next day (definitely not speaking from experience).

I think one of my strongest qualities as IE would be how much of a team player I am. Compatibility between partners is very important for IE and I would say I get along with everyone. But more importantly, I prioritise open communication in a team and make an effort to listen to and respect everyone’s opinions.

The quality of the work that I put out matters a lot to me. I surely have standards that I try to achieve to the best of my abilities, but I also understand that mistakes and setbacks are a part of the process. I believe that I can stay calm and positive in tough or overwhelming moments, which is an important quality for this role.

PT has given me so much, whether it’s like-minded friends from all over the world, the chance to help people have a fuksi year as great as mine was by being an ISO, or a space to express myself freely through CanCan. Now, I want to give back to the guild and I think the best way I can do that is as IE.

I’ll happily answer any questions below!

In general, how do you see the event selection of our guild? What kind of events would you like to organize?
I would say that PT’s current selection of events is quite well-balanced. Sitsis are a big part of our event selection, and I would like to build on this, such as by organising more themed sitsis. At the same time, I would focus on increasing the variety of events. For example, I’m interested in organising more casual, low-threshold events like crafts nights, sauna evenings and outdoor events in spring. I would also like to organise more events in collaboration with other guilds, as I think they’re a great way to meet new people and connect with people that you otherwise wouldn’t get the chance to interact with.

How would you take international students into account at events?
As a ChemEng student, this question is very personally significant. I can confirm from my own experience that many international students are very curious about Finnish culture and want to experience it. Therefore, it is important that international students feel included in all guild events, not just English ones. This could be achieved by making sure that the communication regarding the event is both in Finnish and English, having more English song-leading at sitsis, and encouraging international students to join Finnish-side events.

I also think that it is essential for event organisers to have a welcoming attitude towards international students. This is something I would consider when selecting the IE helper team, and I would encourage everyone working at an event to contribute to an inclusive atmosphere. Even a simple “Could you repeat that in English?” can go a long way.

Currently, the English and Finnish speaking students of PT are quite separated in terms of the events they participate in and this is something I would like to change as IE. I would work together with the International and Master’s Captain in the board and the International Committee of PT to organise joint events that bring Finnish and English speaking students together.

Being IE is teamwork. What kind of partner would you like for yourself and what kind of partner would you be? How would you maintain a good atmosphere and working habits with your partner?
In a good pair, partners complement each other. It is important to know your partner’s strengths and weaknesses so that you can let them take the lead in their area of strength and help out where they feel less confident. I would be a kind, encouraging and supportive partner. I know that it can get overwhelming to work on this kind of large scale stuff, especially when things don’t go as planned. I would make sure to keep the spirits high in those kinds of moments.

I would definitely want my partner to feel comfortable telling me if I am making a mistake or if something I am doing is not working, which is why I would be very honest and open to my partner and expect the same from them. A good pair should be able to handle differences in opinions professionally and respectfully. I would be an easygoing and flexible partner, which I believe is the foundation to finding the middle ground when disagreements happen.

To maintain a good atmosphere, it is important for partners to stay in touch about things unrelated to board tasks as well. Getting to know each other personally helps build trust and establish a good communication dynamic.

IE helpers are IE’s most important help in organising events. What kind of IE helper team would you like to form and how would you ensure that they form a close-knit team?
First of all, I would pay attention to the size of the team. It should be large enough that the workload is manageable for everyone, but small enough that each person has the opportunity to participate and contribute meaningfully. When forming the IE helper team, I would prioritise motivation, willingness to put in the effort, and genuine interest in the role.

Being an IE helper comes with responsibilities, but it is more than just work. It also means becoming a part of a community and doing things you enjoy. I would like to create a warm atmosphere where everyone enjoys coming to committee meetings, feels excited when preparing for events, and looks forward to what we as a team will do next.

A good way to achieve this is by organising refreshers or hangouts within the team, such as board game nights, apartment crawls or trips together. Making sure that no one is overworked and motivation stays high throughout the year is also important. I would aim to achieve this by being mindful and considerate, for example by reducing the workload during exam weeks and finding a suitable frequency of meetings and events. I would also ensure open communication within the team – everyone should be comfortable expressing their opinions and feel heard

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_button button_url=”@ET-DC@eyJkeW5hbWljIjp0cnVlLCJjb250ZW50IjoicG9zdF9saW5rX3VybF9wYWdlIiwic2V0dGluZ3MiOnsicG9zdF9pZCI6IjY0NDgifX0=@” button_text=”Takaisin” _builder_version=”4.16″ _dynamic_attributes=”button_url” _module_preset=”default” custom_button=”on” button_text_size=”16px” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_button][/et_pb_column_inner][/et_pb_row_inner][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ custom_padding_last_edited=”on|tablet” _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”0px|||||” custom_padding_tablet=”2px|12px|0px|12px|false|true” custom_padding_phone=”” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”0px|||||” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_comments _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”||||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_comments][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Hello!
