I’m Sonja, a second year material science bachelors student. I have been interested in guild activity since the start of my fuksi year and this year I have acted as one of the guilds officials as a song leader apprentice, abi responsible and translator. The past year at Aalto, in chemical engineering and in PT has been so amazing that I want to be a part of guild activity in a much larger scale.

I’m applying to be head of study affairs because I want to help my peers get the best possible education. I believe that education should evolve actively with students and quality in mind. That’s why I want to guard the associations members’ interest, collecting feedback and meeting with professors to make sure that everyone’s voice is heard. It’s important that the head of study affairs is approachable because students wellbeing is also a part of studies just as much as education is. I want to be a part of creating and up-keeping our guilds atmosphere which has been of the utmost importance to me since the start of my studies; an open atmosphere where everybody can be themselves.

In addition to being passionate, I am organized, precise and social. I feel that these traits are an excellent combination for the head of study affairs. In administrative work it’s important to stay on top of one’s responsibilities and handle them with extreme devotion. But no role on the board is a solo job i.e. communication, flexibility and teamwork are vital. They are skills that I have been able to utilize and develop for instance in our high schools student board, as a guild official and in customer service work. My experience as an abi responsible and active abi-marketer would also be of use in this role because as head of study affairs I would be responsible for abi-marketing alongside the abimaster and abi responsibles.

Sonja

What substantive or structural issues would you like to influence in our studies? What do you think are the best ways to influence?

The structure of studies is quite a tricky subject. Courses in the curriculum must be timed in a way that allows students to earn approximately 60 credits per school year, but five courses right at the beginning of one’s first year is a lot to take in, regardless of the courses being taught in the span of two periods. Structural changes could also be necessary between the different majors. I would want to influence improving the structure of our studies to not overwhelm students during certain periods. I understand that structural changes are difficult because of the amount of moving parts and things to consider. Change could however be influenced, for instance, by collecting feedback from students about their experiences and opinions together with the university and using the collected feedback as a basis for conversation about possible solutions to benefit the students.

How would you improve the communication between the university and the students?

Adding more study-related events organized in cooperation with the university would be one possibility for improving communication. Feedback surveys, similar to the course feedback surveys, that are open throughout the whole course, could also be a good way to offer students an easy way to communicate their thoughts about the course content and teaching while the course is still ongoing.

How would you develop the guild’s study-related events?

I feel the guild has offered good study-related events but there could be more of them. For example, more events similar to coffee break with professors, offering low-threshold opportunities to converse about studies, would be beneficial. Especially in the spring it would be useful to have more than one opportunity to learn about the different majors and ask about them. And some sort of “head of study affairs drop-in clinic” at pHuone would be a nice way to promote active engagement between members and head of study affairs while offering a more convenient opportunity for members to bring up their thoughts and troubles.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_button button_url=”@ET-DC@eyJkeW5hbWljIjp0cnVlLCJjb250ZW50IjoicG9zdF9saW5rX3VybF9wYWdlIiwic2V0dGluZ3MiOnsicG9zdF9pZCI6IjY0NDgifX0=@” button_text=”Takaisin” _builder_version=”4.16″ _dynamic_attributes=”button_url” _module_preset=”default” custom_button=”on” button_text_size=”16px” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_button][/et_pb_column_inner][/et_pb_row_inner][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ custom_padding_last_edited=”on|tablet” _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”0px|||||” custom_padding_tablet=”2px|12px|0px|12px|false|true” custom_padding_phone=”” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”0px|||||” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_comments _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”||||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_comments][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

HeiMoi!
